fabrics and textures

One of the foundations of a room is the fabrics and textures it contains.

This is true whether you’re discussing bedrooms and living rooms where fabrics play a very obvious central role or kitchens and bathrooms where the role of fabrics is more specialized or seemingly marginal.  Think of how you interact with rooms in homes.  One of the materials we’re most likely to touch often is fabric.  How it looks matters, but also how it feels shapes our feelings about a room.

The texture and look of the fabrics in your home matter a great deal to how you and others experience living and doing in the space.  Whether you want to go with classic standbys like leather furniture or to emphasize your unique tastes with less common materials for upholstery and curtains, we can make your journey through the vast and varied landscape of fabrics much easier.

How you need the fabric to perform is, of course, a central concern.  Matching window treatments throughout the house can unify the space subtly, even with substantial changes to color and lighting between rooms.  However, the fabrics used for window treatments may be entirely unsuited to upholstering the furniture in your family’s favorite room.  The functionality of fabric lays in its ability to perform the role we need it to well, but also for a long time.  How easy or difficult a fabric is to clean, mend, or replace, and its availability and cost are also big factors for most of our clients.

As designers with decades of collective experience, we’re sensitive to these varied needs, and able to provide expert advice based on your needs, preferences, and the market conditions that affect your project.

The Fabric Selection Process

We first determine the properties you’re going to need for a given application.  The durability, opacity, cleanability, and how aesthetically important a fabric is to the overall look of your room are all factors we will assess and consider before making recommendations.

As important as the properties of the fabric itself are, how the fabric will relate to the rest of your room is also an essential consideration.  The color, texture, and sheen of your fabrics will affect how well they fit in with other materials and colors in your space.

We will provide samples of fabrics that can be felt and examined closely in context with the other materials and colors being considered for your space, to make sure the decision is made with all the necessary information.

Once we have provided you with our guidance and you’ve made a decision that you’re happy with, we will place orders, track and schedule delivery & installation for all the chosen materials, furniture, furnishings and window treatments that will make your newly appointed room feel cozy and inviting.  In a matter of weeks or months, your room will be transformed.
